St. Cloud Symphony Orchestra Young Composer Competition

Winner declared February 1, 2012

St. Cloud Symphony Orchestra Young Composer Competition is intended to enhance and expand the opportunities of a young composer in the State of Minnesota.  Compositions will be reviewed by a current published composer.  The First Place Winner will receive a scholarship in the amount of $1,000 to be applied to continued study of composition.  The winning selection will be considered for the Grand Prize, a live performance of the composition at a St. Cloud Symphony Orchestra performance.  The Grand Prize will be awarded at the discretion of the Artistic Director/Principal Conductor and staff of the St. Cloud Symphony Orchestra. 

Official Rules and Regulations

  1. Only one submission per composer will be accepted.

 

  1. The competition is open to students either studying composition at an institution or with a private instructor in the State of Minnesota.
  1. The Artistic Director/Principal Conductor will determine if the scholarship winner will also be the Grand Prize Winner.  The Grand Prize Winner will have their composition performed by the orchestra at a regularly scheduled symphony concert.  Artistic, logistic and financial considerations of the orchestra will be taken into consideration when making this decision.  If no Grand Prize Winner is chosen, a reading of the work will occur at the discretion of the Artistic Director and orchestra staff. The winning composer will have the opportunity to record the reading at their own expense.

 

  1. One winner will receive a $1,000 scholarship to further study composition at their current institution or private teacher.
  1. Maximum instrumentation is 2+1, 2, 2, 2 – 4, 3, 3, 1 – timp+4, hrp, str, and electronics (all clarification questions can be emailed to library.personnel.scso@gmail.com)

 

  1. Submitted works are expected last approximately five minutes with a maximum of eight minutes.
  1. All candidates must be 25 years of age or younger before June 1, 2012.
  2. Complete submissions will be accepted from December 15 through December 23, 2011.

 

A COMPLETE SUBMISSION INCLUDES ALL OF THE FOLLOWING:

  1. Application form
  2. $35 check or money order made out to: St. Cloud Symphony Orchestra
  3. Two bound and legible scores of the work with your name and title of the piece removed.
  4. 2 minute minimum sound recording
    1. This can be a midi file, piano reduction, or recording on DVD, CD, or USB drive
  5. One letter of recommendation from a composition teacher or professional musician (via mail or e-mail to: library.personnel.scso@gmail.com)
